The Armor of God

The Armor of God

by Cynthia Chung

My son was having a tough weekend. He was a few months into a new job that involved making difficult decisions and instituting new policies that were not always well-received by the staff. Sad and dejected, the devil found this the perfect time to engage him in a spiritual battle. The devil assaulted him with doubts about his ability to do the job. The evil one filled him with anxieties and regrets about the decisions and policies he had made.

Depression began to set in and in the midst of it, the Lord gave my son a vision. In this vision my son was in a battle, protected by the armor of God. He was fully clothed in armor with a helmet, breastplate, and a large shield to protect himself from the flaming arrows (the doubts, anxieties, insults) of the devil. Trying to defend himself from the devil’s attacks, my son pulled out his sword and was surprised to find that his sword was a toothpick!

“Lord,” he cried, “How am I to combat the devil with a mere toothpick!” But before the Lord could answer, my son realized why his sword was so small. The sword of the Spirit is the word of God. It is the only offensive weapon in the armor of God. The Lord’s message to my son,…. to me, …..and to all of us, is to read and dwell in His Word. Reading Scripture not only deepens your relationship with the Lord but it also strengthens and sharpens your sword of the Spirit. We are all engaged in a spiritual battle. Arm yourself with God’s Word!

Ephesians 6: 10-17

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
